What Is Sustainable Jersey Certification?
Sustainable Jersey helps municipalities create healthier communities through policy and environmental change. Tobacco Free for a Healthy NJ partners with Sustainable Jersey to guide towns toward a Tobacco-Free Community designation.
How Does It Work?
Municipalities earn points for actions that promote tobacco-free living. Achieve 15 points to earn the designation and show your commitment to health.
Examples of point-earning actions:
-
Education Programs – Partner with youth groups to raise awareness (5 points)
-
Point-of-Sale Policies – Reduce tobacco advertising and impulse buys (10 points)
-
Tobacco-Free Worksites – Create healthy workplace environments (5 points)
-
Smoke-Free Outdoor Dining – Protect patrons in outdoor spaces (5 points)
-
Smoke-Free Housing – Reduce secondhand smoke in multi-unit homes (10 points)

Why Does It Matter?
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. By adopting these policies, municipalities protect residents, reduce health risks, and build a stronger, healthier community.
