Tracking Tobacco Trends in NJ

The NJ Department of Health monitors tobacco-use attitudes and behaviors statewide. Ongoing surveys and reports help measure program impact and guide future planning for a healthier New Jersey. In 2022, cigarette smoking among NJ high school students was just 1%—half the national rate. Overall, 11% reported using any tobacco product in the past 30 days, with e-cigarettes leading the way. Despite NJ’s flavor ban, nearly all youth who vape use flavored products, and disposable devices dominate. Disparities by gender, race, and grade level remain, highlighting the need for targeted prevention and cessation efforts.

Youth Tobacco Declines, but Challenges Remain

The 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) shows progress: e-cigarette use dropped from 2.13 million youth in 2023 to 1.63 million in 2024. However, nicotine pouch use remains steady. Learn more about the CDC’s latest report and the FDA’s blog on actions driving this momentum.

NJ Middle School Tobacco Survey

The NJ Middle School Survey is conducted by the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS). Seventh and eighth grade students are asked about substance use, mental health, bullying, social media, and risk and protective factors. Montclair State University’s College for Education and Engaged Learning or CREEHS NJ Middle School Survey provides critical insights into youth tobacco use and behaviors. This data helps public health professionals design effective strategies to prevent tobacco use and protect young people across the state.
