Tobacco Prevention Highlight

Cessation/Great American Smokeout (GASO)

The Great American Smokeout is an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS). It is held on the 3rd Thursday of November. This social engineering event focuses on encouraging Americans to quit tobacco smoking. People are challenged to stop smoking for at least 24 hours assuming that their decision not to smoke will last longer, hopefully forever. Today, more than 43 million people in the U.S. smoke cigarettes, that is about 1 in 5 adults. Tobacco Free for Healthy NJ is providing resources to help you educate your community as well as direct them to cessation services.

TFHNJ INITIATIVE SPOTLIGHT

Working At The Point-of-Sale!

The Paterson Coalition Against Substance Abuse (PCASA) just completed a store assessment project which included 67 stores located a half-mile from 8 of the 50 plus schools in the Paterson School District. The assessment team included Montclair State University interns, coalitions members and youth from Sankofa Academy. Youth were trained in conducting store assessments and focus groups were held with them as well. PCASA has received technical assistance with point-of-sale store assessments and point of sale policy options from Counter Tools in partnership with Tobacco Free for a Healthy NJ. These store assessments were aimed at learning more about the retail environment and how this could impact youth initiation with tobacco products in addition to other products that can negatively impact youth. Using this data, the PCASA team and coalition members will be engaging stakeholders to advocate for point-of-sale policy adoption including options for a locally held license and enforcement.
