FEATURED NEWS
BREAKING NEWS:
The 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey showed that there was a significant drop in the number of U.S. middle and high school students who reported current (past 30 days) e-cigarette use – a decrease from 2.13 million (7.7%) youth in 2023 to 1.63 million (5.9%) youth in 2024. Youth nicotine pouch use did not show a statistically significant change from 2023 (1.5% in 2023 and 1.8% in 2024).The most commonly used device among current e-cigarette users was disposables (55.6%), followed by prefilled/refillable pods or cartridges (15.6%) – with the most used products being Elf Bar (36.1%), Breeze (19.9%), Mr. Fog (15.8%), Vuse (13.7%) and JUUL (12.6%).
NEW TRENDS:Â
With funding from NIH and FDA, Rutgers Center for Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco seeks to understand emerging tobacco and nicotine product use among teens. A new find and trend is Geek Bar, which adheres closely to the frequently emulated ElfBar shape, however, the most popular alternate designs are offered and the Geek Bar Pulse features multiple vaping modes.
Several Wildwood boardwalk businesses were accused of selling vape products and tobacco without proper licenses, authorities say. The special agents seized all tobacco and vapor products at the stores and officials with the state attorney general's office also issued violation notices for selling flavored vape products after an earlier investigation in June.

GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT
The Great American SmokeOut is an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS). It is held on the 3rd Thursday of November. This social engineering event focuses on encouraging Americans to quit tobacco smoking. People are challenged to stop smoking for at least 24 hours assuming that their decision not to smoke will last longer, hopefully forever. Tobacco Free for Healthy NJ is providing resources to help you educate your community as well as direct them to cessation services. This year, the Great American SmokeOut is held on November 21st, 2024, and the theme is Breaking Up with Big Tobacco!

Tobacco Free Community Designation
Congratulations to Vineland for achieving the Tobacco Free Community designation this quarter. Point Pleasant and Island Heights both earned five points this quarter toward the designation. Municipalities can pass a point-of-sale ordinance, a smoke free outdoor ordinance that goes beyond the State Law or other actions like sharing free statewide cessation resources or passing a resolution that supports smoke free workplaces including outdoor dining spaces in order to earn points toward the designation.
TFHNJ INITIATIVE SPOTLIGHT
Working Well Tobacco-Free:
Working Well Tobacco-Free has released a digital letter for employers around the state of New Jersey to stay informed on tobacco and smoking regarding the workplace. The letter will include educational opportunities for employers and employees, as well as linking employers to TFHNJ’s Worksite Toolkit which assists businesses in developing comprehensive tobacco and smoke free worksite policy in addition to connecting them to cessation services offered around the state.
In order to encourage and support employees looking to quit, Working Well released a video for Shoprite to use in employee break rooms. This video serves as a connection to cessation services in New Jersey as well as education on how using tobacco impacts your career and overall health. Another video was produced by Working Well and is in five DMVs around NJ that also provide encouragement to quit along with TFHNJ’s quit services.
