Director of the Tobacco-Free for A Healthy New Jersey Central Region Program

Dr. Marc Steinberg is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and has appointments at the Rutgers University Center for Alcohol Studies, the UMDNJ School of Public Health and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Dr. Steinberg received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of South Florida and has studied addictive behaviors since he was an undergraduate at Rutgers University. Dr. Steinberg received a Career Development Award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to study smokers with schizophrenia and recently received a Global Research Award on Nicotine Dependence to study varenicline as an aid to cigarette reduction and motivational interviewing to encourage smokers to quit. Dr. Steinberg has received funding from the American Legacy Foundation, NJ Department of Health and Senior Services, Pfizer, and the National Institutes of Health. He has published numerous research articles and book chapters on tobacco use and motivation. Dr. Steinberg serves as the Chair of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry Research Committee and as a member of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco’s Treatment Network.

Coordinator of the Tobacco-Free for A Healthy New Jersey Central Region

Donna Drummond, MS, LPC, CTTS has been the Coordinator of the Tobacco-Free for a Healthy New Jersey Central Region since its inception in 2007 and Program Coordinator and Health Educator at the UMDNJ-Mercer County Tobacco Dependence Program Quit Center since 2001. She was instrumental in expanding the Mercer County Tobacco Program to five sites in Trenton and outlying areas where she provided outreach and education in the community along with group and individual counseling to smokers. As Program Coordinator for a Tobacco-Free for a Healthy New Jersey Central Region, Ms. Drummond continues to partner with community-based organizations and concerned individuals throughout Central New Jersey to work to change or establish community norms, attitudes and behaviors around tobacco with a mission of supporting and endorsing local outdoor smoke-free air laws. Ms. Drummond is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist who continues her education attending trainings and seminars, most recently on addictions at the Behavioral Health and Addictive Disorders Conference in Florida and the August 2012 National Conference on Tobacco or Health in Kansas City.

Program Communication Specialist
Nancy Szkodny
is the Program Assistant for the Division of Addiction Psychiatry and Communication Specialist for the Central Jersey Tobacco Free for a Healthy New Jersey. She is responsible for increasing the visibility and awareness of resources available to our target population though the design, development, and maintenance of the Tobacco-Free For A Healthy New Jersey Central Region website. She also designs and prints the newsletter, educational and advertising materials promoting this program.

Division of Addiction Psychiatry
The UMDNJ-RWJMS Division of Addiction Psychiatry has been very active in providing tobacco control services to the general population and the CTCP target populations. Our agency includes individuals who are national leaders on Addressing Tobacco in Mental Health and addiction populations and who have influenced policy changes for these populations, helped agencies better address tobacco, developed tobacco trainings, and done extensive research / program evaluations.
